Karnataka will substantially reduce the outflow of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from Thursday.
State officials said as per a Supreme Court interim order, Karnataka has to release 9000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day till the midnight of November 6 and 5000 cusecs every day between November 7 and 15.
"As per our calculations and our reading of the Supreme Court order, Karnataka has to ensure that about 99,000 cusecs of water is released to Tamil Nadu by November 15," said an official.
"Latest measurements of storage levels in Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu show that over 113,450 cusecs of water was received till late Wednesday evening, which is more than the stipulated 99,000 cusecs the state [Karnataka] was ordered to release," the official said.
The apex court has also agreed to consider the inflows from intermediary areas between the Krishna Raja Sagar dam and Mettur dam as part of the Cauvery water reaching Tamil Nadu.
In the wake of excess inflows in the last few days, thanks to a vigorous north-east monsoon, the storage level in Mettur dam has shot up to 9.8 tmc ft, the official added.
