EC seeks compliance report from Gujarat govt

The Election Commission has asked for a compliance report from the Gujarat government on its directive to transfer police officers who have served in a particular district or in their home district for the last four years.

Election Commission sources said that the state government has already sent compliance reports to the chief electoral officer on some transfers, which would be compiled and forwarded to the Commission.

The Commission had communicated the directive to the chief secretary last month to ensure free and fair polls in the state, which has been scheduled for December 12.

The sources said that the transfer would cover officers in the rank of Collectors, Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officers, Deputy Commissioners, Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Inspector Generals, Deputy Inspector Generals, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police.

Keeping a strict vigil on the conduct of free and fair polls in the state the Commission had on Friday directed the state government to remove hoardings and posters along 'communal lines'.
