Second flight of GSLV in February

The second flight of the Geo-stationary Satellite Launch Vehicle, GSLV-D2, is scheduled for February 2003, Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman Dr K Kasturirangan said on Friday in Bangalore.

The GSLV-D2 would be carrying the GSAT-2 experimental satellite with a four channel C-band Fixed Satellite Service transponder, a two channel KU-band FSS transponder, and a mobile satellite service transponder, he said.

The GSAT-2 will conduct experiments such as total radiation dose monitor, surface charge potential monitor, coherent radio beacon experiment and solar X-ray spectrometer.

The GSLV-D1 was launched on April 18, 2001 to mark the beginning of a series of ISRO's tests on GSLV rockets.

Kasturirangan said India's first exclusive weather satellite METSAT [Meteorological Satellite Applications and Natural Hazards Monitoring] was functioning well and sending pictures on a daily basis for the Indian Meteorology Department.

The satellite would have an operational life of seven years, Dr Kasturirangan said.
