Karnataka to obey SC order on Cauvery water release

Hours after the Supreme Court directed Karnataka to keep releasing 9,000 cusecs of Cauvery water every day to Tamil Nadu, state Law Minister D B Chandra Gowda on Friday said the state would obey the Supreme Court directive.

"Whether it is possible or not is not the question. We have to obey the Supreme Court order and that we will," he said, when asked whether it would be possible for Karnataka to release the water to Tamil Nadu.

Stating that it was a 'difficult time' for Karnataka, Gowda said though there were problems, Karnataka would obey the order.

He said in the Cauvery River Authority meeting the states could talk in detail and examine the ground realities.

"If the Prime Minister [Atal Bihari Vajpayee] calls the CRA meet soon, it will be good for us," he said.

He, however, refused to comment on the court deferring action on the contempt petitions filed by Tamil Nadu against Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna.
