Heavy firing on Friday morning along the Line of Control in the R S Pura sector in Jammu and Kashmir has triggered tension on the international border with Pakistan.
A defence spokesman in Jammu said that around 0600 hrs (IST) Pakistani troops began firing mortars in the R S Pura and Samba sectors in Jammu region.
They also fired from small arms, he added.
"The Indian army returned the fire and the exchange is still on," he said.
Even otherwise, Jammu has been tense for the past few days following Tuesday's terrorist attack by three militants on an army camp at Kalu Chak, 10 km from the city.
Thirty-four persons, including 24 army personnel and their family members, died in the attack.
