Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday earned a reprieve from Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee after meeting him for over two hours, during which he outlined steps for restoration of normalcy and various relief measures undertaken following the recent riots in the state.
Talking to reporters after coming out from the prime minister's Race Course Road residence, Modi said that this was the first time he met Vajpayee after the February 27 killings in Godhra in Gujarat.
He said he gave an 'electronic presentation' to the prime minister of the relief and security measures initiated.
"I also requested the prime minister to spare some time for coming to Gujarat," Modi said, adding added that he was grateful to Vajpayee for agreeing to bear 50 per cent of Rs 100,000 to be given to the kin of those killed in the recent riots.
He also expressed the hope that the prime minister would agree to sharing the costs for the rations being giving to the inmates in the relief camps in Gujarat.
He refuted media reports that some relief camps were being wound up in Gujarat.
He said that there were 97,000 inmates of various communities in the 101 relief camps.
Modi also refuted media reports that officials connected with controlling the riots were transferred.
"These officials were given promotional postings and they were not sidelined," he said.
