Violence continues in Baroda, Ahmedabad

Police opened fire in Baroda to control a violent mob even as curfew continued in six areas in the city and other parts of Gujarat.

The firing took place when the mob tried to set fire to houses and kiosks in curfew-bound areas of the city sometime late after midnight, police said in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

However, no one was injured in the firing, they added.

There is no let-up in the violence and group clashes in parts of south, central and north Gujarat even as the army continued patrolling in the curfew-bound areas of Ahmedabad and Baroda, police added.

Meanwhile in Ahmedabad, two persons, including a woman, were injured when an explosive was thrown at an autorikshaw in the working class-dominated Bapunagar area late on Monday night, police said adding the injured were hospitalised.

The curfew in the six police station areas of Kalupur, Dariapur, Shahpur, Karanj, Haveli and Vejalpur continued for the sixth day.

Police also fired seven rounds and burst eight tear-gas shells in Ramol area on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on Monday night to disperse a mob.

The mob, which indulged in heavy stone-pelting, set fire to some shops in the area.

Two policemen, including a sub-inspector, were injured in the incident, police sources added.

Prantij town, Himmatnagar, Modasa (in Sabarkantha district), Chhota Udaipur, Jambusar, Borsad and Anand also continued to be under curfew.
