Fresh violence in Godhra, Mehsana and Baroda

In fresh outbreak of violence in Gujarat on Wednesday, a mob went on a rampage in Godhra town using firearms and stones prompting police to open fire, even as three people belonging to the minority community were stabbed to death in Mehsana district.

The police opened fire when a 500-strong mob, using firearms and stones, started attacking people in Jahurpura area near the old bus stand in Godhra.

There was no casualty in the police firing, police sources said.

However, Panchmahal District Collector Jayanti S Ravi refused to categorise the violence as communal, describing it as 'commotion' following a fire in a shop in the sensitive Jahurpura area.

She claimed that the shop was gutted due to an electrical short circuit.

"Some arrests have been made as part of our routine combing operations," she added.

Meanwhile, the police in Ahmedabad said that three people belonging to minority community were stabbed in Visnagar town of Mehsana district.

Elsewhere, a report from Baroda said that the police had to fire six rounds to disperse a stone-pelting mob, which had set fire to a scooter in Bhavmanpura locality.
