IUML seeks stringent action in Gujarat

The Indian Union Muslim League on Saturday described the situation in Gujarat as a "total collapse of the administrative machinery" and urged the Centre to take "stringent possible action by directing the Gujarat government that it means business".

Addressing a press conference at his residence before his scheduled meeting with Prime Minister A B Vajpayee on Saturday evening, IUML Lok Sabha member E Ahmed described the situation in the state as a "holocaust that has now extended its grip to other states and towns".

"There is no political will," he lamented. "There is a feeling that the administration was directly inciting the people," he added, arguing that the police were reluctant to intervene even when they were present at a number of scenes of "human carnage".

Appealing to all sections of society, particularly Muslims, to maintain peace and harmony, Ahmed recalled that only recently parliamentary delegations had visited a number of Muslim countries to mobilise public opinion against terrorism and boost India's secular credentials and its pluralistic traditions. "The Government of Gujarat has tarnished the image of our nation," he said. "We are all sorry for this."
