Centre has failed to maintain peace: Jama Masjid Imam

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Imam of the Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, after meeting Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday, declared that the central and state governments have failed to restore peace in Gujarat.

Bukhari told reporters outside Vajpayee's Race Course Road home that peace was not restored till 8 am on Friday morning, despite the prime minister's intention to do so.

He claimed the army was not deployed in Gujarat till late Friday afternoon, despite the government's claim that troops were conducting flag marches from Thursday night.

Bukhari appealed to the people, especially Muslims, not to be provoked by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and maintain peace and harmony. He said a delegation of members of Parliament, comprising both Hindus and Muslims, should visit Gujarat to restore peace in the state.
