Uproar in Lok Sabha over Gujarat violence

As the House reassembled at noon after an hour-long adjournment, members from Samajwadi Party, RJD and Muslim League rushed to the well demanding resignation of the government accusing it of 'inaction'.

Home Minister L K Advani, who was scheduled to make a statement on the situation in trouble-torn Gujarat, could not do so owing to adjournment.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was present in the House, was later seen confabulating with TDP leader K Yerran Naidu, Union Heavy Industries Minister Manohar Joshi and other cabinet colleagues.

Opposition members were on their feet as soon as the House assembled on Friday morning raising slogans against the government's failure to contain the violence in Gujarat following the attack on passengers of the Sabarmati Express on Wednesday.

Soon after the Speaker finished making obituary references, opposition members rushed to the well leading to adjournment of the House till 1200 hours.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 1400 hours within a minute after it met, apparently in anticipation of noisy scenes over the Gujarat killings.

The abrupt adjournment caught the members by surprise with Congress members demanding that the leader of the opposition in the House, Manmohan Singh, be allowed to speak on the Gujarat incidents.
