Hundreds of people, whose name figure in voters' list in Kashmir, may not cast their vote when Jammu and Kashmir goes to polls in September. The reason -- they are dead.
The voters' lists in the Valley have not been updated since 1988, when the polling age was 21.
In fact, since the onset of militancy in 1989, there has been no general revision of these lists.
"Names of hundreds of dead men and women exist on our voter lists," a senior election official said.
"The Election Commission of India has directed us to go for summary revisions. So, some inclusions and deletions have been made. But that is not enough. Also, people afraid of reprisal attacks by militants, do not register their names in voters' list," he said.
