SP general secretary Amar Singh said that the People's Front stood dissolved the moment SP chief 'Mulayam Singh Yadav and myself walked out' of Tuesday's meeting to discuss the alliance's candidate for the presidential poll.
"We cannot lose our entity by opposing a patriotic Muslim who is a Bharat Ratna awardee and an internationally acclaimed scientist," he said.
Singh pointed out that his party was the first to propose Kalam's name and 'this has been acknowledged even by BJP spokesperson Maya Singh'.
He said the Left parties had decided to nominate incumbent President K R Narayanan polls without consulting the Samajwadi Party.
Despite reservations, we extended our support for the sake of the unity of the People's Front, he added.
He denied that the SP had changed its stance after the National Democratic Alliance chose Kalam as its candidate.
