Surjeet, Sonia discuss presidential nominee

Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet on Tuesday had an hour-long meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the wake of the National Democratic Alliance's decision to propose the name of scientist A P J Abdul Kalam for the post of President.

The CPI-M leader declined to say what transpired at the meeting.

Surjeet's meeting with Gandhi assumes significance as differences surfaced in the People's Front on Kalam's candidature during its inconclusive meeting earlier in the day.

The Congress Working Committee, which also met on Tuesday, had authorised Gandhi to hold discussions with People's Front leaders on the issue.

When asked if the Congress had abandoned President K R Narayanan as its nominee for a second term, party spokesman Jaipal Reddy said, "Narayanan is still our candidate."

Those present at the CWC meeting chaired by Gandhi were Ambika Soni, Pranab Mukherjee, Ahmed Patel, Manmohan Singh, Oscar Fernandes, R K Dhawan, Motilal Vora, Mohsina Kidwai and Mukul Wasnik.
