Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is likely to visit the United States in the second week of September to attend the 57th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a source in the Ministry of External Affairs told rediff.com.
The programme is in the process of being finalised, he said.
According to the MEA source, Union External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha and Minister of State for External Affairs Digvijay Singh are likely to join the PM.
Singh may stay in the US for two weeks, he added.
Normally, the General Assembly's regular session begins each year on the third Tuesday in September and continues until the third week of December. But this year it is expected to meet on September 9.
In recent years, the Assembly has been in session throughout the year.
At the start of each regular session, the Assembly elects a new President, 21 Vice-Presidents and the Chairmen of the Assembly's six main committees.
A spokesman of prime minister's office neither denied nor confirmed Vajpayee's visit. He told rediff.com: "The UN assembly is earlier than scheduled. We will take a decision of PM's visit at an appropriate time."
