N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

In an attempt to placate Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who is miffed at not being invited to the swearing-in of President A P J Abdul Kalam, Lal Kishenchand Advani spoke to her and expressed regret over the incident.

According to a Tamil Nadu government press release, Advani also promised to have the Table of Precedence reviewed with respect to formal government functions.

Absolving Advani of any personal responsibility, the release quoted the chief minister as saying, "It was a lapse at the level of the bureaucrats."
