Pakistan's war games conclude

Pakistani defence forces on Friday concluded their biggest ever war games in three decades that lasted for 10 days, with President Gen Pervez Musharraf declaring that the country's 'adversary' can only be 'deterred by the capability of our armed forces'.

The war games went smoothly "under the current nuclear environment" in the region, the armed forces said in a statement. The Pakistani army, navy and air force participated in the 10-day long exercise, it said.

"Pakistan is faced with an adversary that has made no secret of its desire to harm our country in every possible way and would only be deterred by the capability of our armed Forces," Musharraf said, apparently referring to India, while addressing military leaders at the concluding session.

He reiterated the potential of the Pakistan armed forces 'to not only defend every inch of the motherland but also strike a telling blow on anyone who dared to violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country'.

Pakistan stood for peace, however, it would not be "blackmailed or coerced" by anyone, Musharraf said. "Our desire for peace should not be misperceived as a sign of weakness," he added.

Expressing full satisfaction at the conduct of the war games, Musharraf stressed that it was imperative that the lessons learnt and conclusions drawn be incorporated in the operational plans of the formations.

Peace-time training at all levels is essential, he said.

Besides Musharraf, all services chiefs and senior military officers were present at the concluding session.
