265 districts facing drought-like conditions: Ajit Singh

Union Agriculture Minister Ajit Singh on Saturday said 265 districts in the country were facing drought-like conditions and warned that the situation could worsen if there is no rain in the next three to four days.

Calling for relief measures in the affected areas, he said the 'food-for-work programme' should be effectively implemented in view of the drought-like conditions prevailing in most parts of the country.

The agriculture ministry is in touch with railway authorities to make arrangements for transportation of water in the drought-hit areas, Singh said.

"There is sufficient stock of food grains in the country to cope with a possible drought, which would nevertheless have an adverse affect on farmers," Singh told reporters in Lucknow.
