Left presidential candidate Colonel Lakshmi Sehgal on Thursday congratulated A P J Abdul Kalam on becoming India's 12th President and assured her supporters that she would continue to work for the goals she had campaigned for.
"I congratulate Abdul Kalam on his election to the post of President and convey my best wishes to him," Sehgal, who left for Kerala on Thursday before declaration of the result, said in a statement.
Thanking her supporters and sponsors, the INA veteran said the presidential poll campaign had given her the opportunity to address a wide section of people 'regarding the vital issues facing the country, especially the danger posed by the communal forces in the wake of the Gujarat events'.
During the campaign, which took her to several states, she said, "Everywhere I went, a large number of people extended support for the issues that I raised -- the defence of secular values and the necessity for all Indians to unitedly work together to address the real problems of poverty and deprivation faced by the millions of our people."
"I assure all of them that I will continue to work for these goals," Sehgal, who became the first woman to contest the presidential polls, said.
