Rs 400 million paid for Rajakumar's release: Public prosecutor

On July 30, 2000, the film star and three others were abducted by Veerappan from his farm house in the Satyamangalam forest area in Tamil Nadu and held captive for over three months.

Sivasubramaniam, reporter of Tamil bi-weekly Nakkeeran, is one of the accused in the kidnapping case.

Opposing his bail application in the Erode district sessions court, SPP Sankaranarayan told the judge that of the Rs 400 million, Rs 100 million was paid by the actor's sons.

The amount was handed over to Veerappan through the bi-weekly's editor R R Gopal, in exchange for Rajakumar and three others, the SPP alleged and added that the crime branch-CID wing of the Tamil Nadu police, investigating the case, had uncovered some incriminating evidence against Gopal and Sivasubramaniam.

The SPP had requested the court not to record the information as it may hamper further investigation.

However, acceding to the request by Sivasubramaniam's counsel R Mohan to record the SPP's statement, judge Tamilvanan posted the bail application for further hearing on July 22.

Earlier, Mohan pointed out that police was yet to provide evidence of Sivasubramaniam's involvement in the kidnapping even 60 days after his arrest.
