An anti-terrorism court in Hyderabad in Pakistan on Monday sentenced British-born Omar Ahmad Saeed Sheikh to death and his three Pakistani accomplices to 25 years of imprisonment for kidnapping and murdering American reporter Daniel Pearl last January, court sources said.
Omar Sheikh, 29, and the three Pakistanis have the right to appeal in a high court, and then in the supreme court.
"Judge Ashraf Ali Shah convicted Omar Sheikh of murder, conspiracy and abduction charges, while the other three accused -- Fahad Naseem, Salman Saqib and Sheikh Adil -- have been sentenced to life imprisonment," chief prosecutor Raja Qureshi said on state television.
Pearl was researching a story on Islamic fundamentalism for the Wall Street Journal when he was kidnapped.
Although his body was not recovered, a video tape clearly showed he had been killed.
Execution in Pakistan is carried out by hanging, but usually only after an exhaustive appeals process.
