29 killed in militant attack in Jammu

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Twenty-nine persons were killed and several injured when a group of heavily armed militants struck in the Hindu-dominated Qasim Nagar locality in Jammu late on Saturday evening.

Police sources said that the condition of several injured persons, who have been admitted to the SMGS hospital, is critical.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Suri told rediff.com that the militants hurled two grenades and then sprayed bullets indiscriminately in the slum cluster.

The residents of the locality were busy watching the India versus England cricket match when the firing began.

The exact number of militants involved is yet to be ascertained, Suri said.

They have taken refuge in the adjoining hills and security personnel are combing the area, he said.

"Thirteen persons died on the spot while the others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital," Suri said.

The bodies of the 13 persons were brought to the SMGS hospital, police said.

Those killed included six women and one child.

Army personnel and police have encircled the area and engaged the militants in a heavy gun battle.

"The area has been completely sealed and the Jammu by-pass closed for traffic," said a police official.

No militant group has admitted responsibility for the attack.
