Elections: Pak SC shuts door
on non-graduates

Providing a boost to President General Pervez Musharraf's electoral reforms, the Pakistan supreme court on Thursday upheld his order banning non-graduates from contesting general elections, a move that could exclude a majority of the population.

The Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-azam), Awami National Party (ANP), Jamhoori Watan Party and the Pakistan Awami Party had gone to court against the order.

In a short order on their petitions, Chief Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan, heading a five-member bench, said, "For reasons to be recorded later, the bench has unanimously dismissed these petitions."

The petitioners had pleaded with the court that the condition would deprive a majority of the population of their fundamental right to contest elections.

The court ruling came a day after Musharraf announced that elections for parliamentary and provincial assemblies would be held on October 10, in keeping with a directive of the apex court.

Musharraf has also passed a decree banning two former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto from holding the office again.
