Temple mahant in Ahmedabad held with firearms

Police arrested a mahant (priest-caretaker) closely associated with the proposed rath yatra (chariot-led procession) in Gujarat following the seizure of nine country-made pistols from his premises in Kunjal village, which is on the route of the procession.

His Saryudasji temple in Prem Darwaja area is closely associated with the Jagannath temple in Jamalpur, that would host the annual rath yatra on July 12, police said.

Jamalpur locality also fell on the route the procession would take, they said.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided the mahant's premises on Sunday in Kunjal village under Kanbha police station in Ahmedabad rural district and recovered the pistols.

The mahant and his driver were arrested under the Arms Act, police said adding the mahant's vehicle has also been impounded.
