The chief minister, however, promised to take appropriate action and release requisite quantities of water "as soon as the position improved".
Stating that he was keeping a close watch on the daily inflow into the reservoirs, he expressed inability to release the water as suggested by Vajpayee. "Our hopes of a vigorous monsoon have not fructified. We have been eagerly waiting for the monsoon to come to our rescue as the position has become quite difficult," he added.
Referring to the conversation that Vajpayee had with him, the chief minister said that the monsoon had been erratic not only in June, but also during the current week of July, particularly in the catchment area. Inflow into the four reservoirs -- Harangi, Hemavathy, Kabini and Krishnarajasagar -- in the Cauvery basin had not been encouraging.
