Narendra Modi postpones Gaurav Rathyatra

The Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has decided to postpone his Gaurav Rathyatra, after being slammed by the Congress-led opposition and the National Human Rights Commission, which said the yatra would be 'dangerous' for the law and order situation in the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party state unit president, Rajendrasingh Rana, while announcing the cancellation of the yatra, however, did not give any reason for it.

BJP sources, however, told rediff.com that Modi decided to postpone his yatra after the central leadership felt that it was 'not the appropriate time'.

The Congress-led opposition had already described the yatra as 'politically motivated'.

Modi was supposed to begin his yatra from Ambaji temple in Banaskantha district on July 4 covering all the districts of Gujarat.

On Monday, state Agriculture Minister Purusottam Rupala said the yatra was being taken out for peace.

However, the Jagananth Rathyatra in Ahmedabad, to coincide with the main Rathyatra in Puri, will take place as scheduled on July 12.
