At least 24 activists of the outlawed Maoist Communist Centre surrendered to the Bihar police on Tuesday, a month after the government announced a rehabilitation package for the rebels, a top police official said.
According him, the MCC activists surrendered in east Champaran district after district superintendent of police D N Gupta toured the area to let the MCC activists know about the rehabilitation package.
Gupta undertook his tour in the Sikrahna and Pakridayal sub-division.
This is the third time within a month that such a large number of Maoists have surrendered. Early this month, 19 Maoists surrendered in the east Champaran district, which included MCC zonal commander Prakash Mallick.
Mallick is the founder of MCC in the north Bihar.
The MCC is active both in Bihar and in neighbouring Jharkhand and has been blamed for the deaths of about two dozen police personnel in recent weeks.
Police sources said more MCC activists were likely to surrender soon. The development took place a month after the government announced those Maoists surrendering to the police with a rocket launcher or machine gun would be given Rs 25,000.
A Maoist bringing in an assault rifle would get Rs 15,000 and those giving up a .303 rifle or pistol or revolver Rs 3,000.
