Karnataka opposition leaders want negotiations with Veerappan

Sadananda R in Chamrajanagar

The Janata Dal-United and other opposition party leaders have demanded immediate suspension of combing operations to nab Veerappan, who abducted senior JD-U leader and former state minister H Nagappa.

JD-U national vice-president Vijay Mallya said the police operations might 'enrage' the forest brigand, prompting him to harm Nagappa.

The priority before the state government, led by the Congress party, should be the safe release of Nagappa, he said.

"We want the government to adopt methods used during Dr Rajakumar's abduction," he said.

Leaders of various opposition parties visited Kamagere village, the native place of Nagappa from where he was abducted by Veerappan, and spoke to the abducted leader's wife assuring her of their support in resolving the crisis.

While the opposition leaders want negotiations, the government is looking to the STF to deliver the breakthrough.
