STF arrests one person for sheltering Veerappan

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

The Karnataka Special Task Force has arrested one person, Madanayaka, for allegedly sheltering Veerappan.

He was picked up from the outskirts of Kanchigahalli village near Kamagere, from where the forest brigand had abducted former Karnataka minister H Nagappa.

Veerappan, police sources said, had stayed in Madanayaka's house on Sunday night, after he had commandeered a bus to engineer his escape from Kamagere.

The STF had initially picked him up for questioning for moving around 'suspiciously'. A search of his house, later, led to the recovery Rs 35,000, probably given by Veerappan, the sources said.

Madanayaka is being questioned at the Gundal base camp of the STF.

Senior Karnataka STF officials, however, admitted that Veerappan might have escaped to the Tamil Nadu side of the Sathyamanglam forest range.

Meanwhile, the national vice-president of Janata Dal-United, Vijay Mallya, demanded immediate suspension of the combing operations in the 'interest of Nagappa's safety'.

He, along with the state JD-U president Byregowda, visited Kamagere.

Mallya said the police operations might enrage Veerappan, leading him to harm Nagappa. "This should be avoided at any cost," he added.
