Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Tuesday assured the Karnataka government all help in tracing Veerappan and rescuing Janata Dal(U) leader H Nagappa, abducted by the brigand on Sunday night.
Though internal security is the responsibility of the respective states, the Centre is ready to provide paramilitary forces to help in combing operations, Advani told mediapersons in Bangalore.
Expressing anguish over the incident, he said, "That law-breakers of this kind should continue with their heinous crimes with impunity is a matter of concern not only for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, but the entire nation."
Meanwhile, state Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge left for Kollegal on Tuesday afternoon for a spot assessment of the situation, ministry officials said adding, he is expected to meet Nagappa's family.
Kharge will also hold an emergency meeting with the Karnataka Special Task Force, which on Monday launched a massive combing operation to track down the bandit and his hostage, they said.
Kharge will be accompanied by former DGP T Srinivasulu, now security advisor to the state government, they said.
Srinivasulu is expected to proceed to Chennai on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning for discussion with officials in Tamil Nadu, they added.
The state government has also enlisted the services of former STF chief Kempaiah, now posted as DIG (Gulbarga range) in north Karnataka, to coordinate operations to apprehend the brigand.
