BJP constitutes Gujarat poll committee

Taking a tough posture ahead of the Gujarat assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided not to tolerate any indiscipline in the party and constituted an election committee under the chairmanship of former chief minister Keshubhai Patel.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of top BJP leaders at the residence of party president Venkaiah Naidu in New Delhi on Thursday night.

This follows the defiant attitude of the Gujarat minister Haren Pandya, who refused to apologise and chose to resign.

The meeting also decided that state BJP president Rajindrasinh Rana would be in-charge of the party organisation, according to party general secretary Arun Shourie.

The meeting, lasting about two-and-a-half hours, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, his predecessor Patel and Rana.

It was also decided that the election would be fought under the leadership of Modi.
