Magisterial inquiry ordered into 'sati' incident

The Madhya Pradesh government on Wednesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident of sati (self-immolation) in Panna district.

Home Minister Mahendra Boudh told the state assembly that 65-year-old Kuttu, who died of burn injuries, was forced to enter the funeral pyre of her husband Mallu Nai.

He said on getting information about the possibility of the woman committing sati, two police personnel from Saleha police station reached Tamoli Patna village and found a crowd of 1000 people gathered near Mallu Nai's funeral pyre.

The grown-up sons did not make any attempt to discourage their mother from sitting on their father's pyre, the policemen have reported.

They pelted stones at the policemen, injuring the duo, Boudh said adding 15 persons were arrested in this connection.

Kuttu did not have good relations with her husband and stayed with her second son Rajkumar while Mallu stayed with their other son Ashok, the minister said.

Leader of the Opposition Dr Gauri Shankar Shejwar said as the incident was of a very serious nature, it deserved to be discussed under an adjournment motion. Speaker Sriniwas Tiwari announced that it would be done on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a four-member National Commission for Women (NCW) delegation is to visit Panna district to look into the incident, its chairperson Purnima Advani announced in Delhi.
