No immediate plan to retire, says Musharraf

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday said he had not yet decided when he would retire as his country's head, saying he still had a role to play, including in bringing democracy in the nation.

"Whenever I consider I no more have a role to play, I will retire," Musharraf told Bangladeshi editors, columnists and senior journalists at a breakfast meeting in Dhaka before leaving for Colombo, ending a three-day visit to Bangladesh.

Asked whether the October elections in Pakistan, with the powers of the national assembly as defined by him, would be acceptable to political parties of his country, Musharraf said, "What the political parties in Pakistan say, they don't mean; what they mean, they don't say. I am very sure it will be acceptable to all of them."

"I am really going to bring democracy in Pakistan," he said, adding, "An elected government alone is not democracy. Democracy has to be tailored to Pakistan's need. Every country has its own environment."

He said the democracy that suits Britain, the US or Bangladesh may not necessarily suit Pakistan, the official BSS news agency reported.
