Dy Speaker extends deadline to resolve Parliament deadlock

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed has extended his deadline for resolving the impasse over the Gujarat issue till Tuesday.

"You can expect my ruling on Tuesday," Sayeed assured soon after adjourning the Lok Sabha till Tuesday and separately meeting a number of MPs, including Union Parliamentary Affairs and Information Technology Minister Pramod Mahajan, Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain, BJP spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Congress chief whip P R Dasmunshi and Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman.

The deadlock entered the second week on Monday with the opposition members insisting on a debate on the Gujarat developments under Rule 184, which ends in a vote, while the ruling BJP is adamant on having a debate only under Rule 193, which does require voting.

Meanwhile, a People's Front parliamentary delegation is likely to visit Gujarat on Tuesday or Wednesday. They are expected to be back on Wednesday evening.
