Modi issue forces Parliament to be adjourned

For the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, proceedings in Parliament were disrupted as the stand-off between ruling and opposition benches on the Modi issue continued, forcing adjournment of both Houses for the day without transacting any business.

As soon as the Lok Sabha assembled, slogan-shouting opposition members trooped into the well demanding removal of the Narendra Modi government.

They shouted 'Modi Hatao Desh bachao (remove Modi and save the country)', while ruling BJP members surged forward towards the well and kept on raising slogans 'Sonia Gandhi maafi maango and desh ke gaddaron ko POTA mein giraftar karo (Sonia Gandhi apologise (for her remark against prime minister) and arrest all the traitors under POTA)'.

In the midst of din, Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed repeatedly pleaded with members to resume their seats and allow the Question Hour.

He would hear them during Zero Hour, Sayeed said. This had no effect on the agitated members and slogan-shouting continued from both sides for seven minutes before the Deputy Speaker called it a day.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Rajya Sabha with opposition members up in arms demanding sacking of the Modi government.

Shouting 'Gujarat Jal Raha Hai (Gujarat is burning)', TDP leader Alladi P Raj Kumar joined the opposition chorus and sought removal of the Modi government.

While RJD leader Laloo Prasad Yadav gesticulated that Gujarat chief minister be put behind bars, Congress leaders shouted 'Modi Hatao Desh bachao'.

In his efforts to restore calm, Chairman Krishan Kant told the agitated members that they could raise some points if they so desired.

"If you want to make any point I will allow," he said.

However, the opposition said nothing short of a discussion on the Gujarat issue followed by a voting would satisfy them. Sensing the mood, Kant adjourned the House for the day within minutes after it assembled.
