Modi resignation issue stalls Parliament again

Parliament remained paralysed for the third day on Wednesday with agitated Congress and other opposition members sticking to their demand for removal of the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat and Samajwadi Party accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of indulging in horse-trading for formation of a BJP-BSP government in Uttar Pradesh.

Both Houses were adjourned for the day within minutes without transacting any legislative business.

K Yerrannaidu and other members of Telugu Desam Party, a key ally of the ruling NDA, too were adamant on the removal of the Gujarat chief minister and were seen supporting the opposition stir.

Yerrannaidu sought to make a statement on Gujarat issue. Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed told the TDP member that he would be allowed to make his submission during Zero Hour.

As soon as the Lok Sabha assembled, Samajwadi Party members were on their feet accusing BJP of resorting to horse-trading in a bid to form government in UP and trooped into the well shouting anti-government slogans.

"Vajpayee sarkar sharam karo (be ashamed Vajpayee government), horse-trading band karo (stop horse-trading)," they shouted even as Congress and other opposition members wanted the ouster of Modi.

Members of Shiv Sena, a partner of the NDA, displaying garlands of onions and one of them wearing a cap tied with onions moved to the front benches demanding immediate lifting of ban on export of the commodity since its price had crashed due to surplus production.

Shiv Sena leader Anant Geete was seen pacifying his party members and asking them to resume their seats.

In a bid to counter the opposition tirade, BJP members too moved to the front rows demanding an apology from the leader of the opposition Sonia Gandhi for her remarks against Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Guwahati.

As repeated pleas by Sayeed to restore calm fell on deaf ears, he adjourned the House till Thursday.
