Rejection of Modi's resignation offer negative: Cong

The Congress Party on Friday night termed as 'negative development' for Indian democracy Bharatiya Janata Party's rejection of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's offer to resign in the wake of widespread criticism of his handling of communal violence in the state.

Congress spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said in Guwahati that the BJP national executive, at its meeting in Goa, has taken upon itself to defend Modi 'whose position has become indefensible'.

Terming the rejection as an indication of party's 'bankruptcy and insensitivity to public anguish over the Gujarat carnage', Congress spokesman Anand Sharma said that Congress' campaign for the ouster of Modi would continue with 'vigour and intensity'.

Congress leader Anand Sharma said, "Modi's offer was a gimmick which lacked both sincerity and intention of owning moral responsibility."

Sharma said the least that was expected of the BJP meeting in Goa was a 'belated acceptance' that Modi government had lost its credibility as well as moral and constitutional right to remain in office.
