Modi stops bureaucrats'
from self-introspection

Chief Minister Narendra Modi has denied top bureaucrats of the state permission to hold a meeting to discuss the bureaucracy's role in communally divided Gujarat.

A directive was issued to Chief Secretary G Subba Rao to see to it that the meeting did not take place.

Over 800 people have died in sectarian violence in Gujarat in the past month-and-a-half and the state bureaucracy has faced flak for not doing enough to stop the violence.

The Modi government has already transferred several police and civic officials for refusing to toe the government line.

The IAS Officers' Association said the meeting has not been cancelled and it has put off to a later date.
