BJP chief rules out Modi's removal

Bharatiya Janata Party chief K Jana Krishnamurthy on Monday ruled out removal of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the wake of continuing communal violence in the state.

"I don't understand why an individual is being targeted like this for no fault of his. My advice to those demanding his removal is that they should appeal to the electorate of Gujarat to reject him when the state goes to polls in February next year rather than clamouring for his ouster now," he told reporters.

He criticised the opposition parties and also some of the BJP allies for demanding Modi's removal.

When told about Samata Party spokesman Shambhu Shrivastav's demand for Modi's resignation, Krishnamurthy said no such demand from that party had as yet reached him.

He, however, added that he would seek senior party leader George Fernandes' clarification on it at the next meeting of the National Democratic Alliance's coordination committee.

"Modi will not be removed just because X,Y,Z are demanding for it," he said.

Defending Modi, he said the Gujarat chief minister did all he could to contain communal frenzy in the state.
