Samata, Trinamool demand Modi's removal

Pressure began mounting on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with the demand for his removal emanating for the first time from key BJP allies - Samata Party and the Trinamool Congress - for restoration of the confidence of minorities and normalcy in the state.

"It is very painful to admit that Modi has failed to discharge his constitutional responsibility. Enough is enough. We request the BJP leadership to select a new leader who can restore sense of security among the people of Gujarat," Samata Party spokesman Shambhoo Shrivastava said in Delhi on Sunday.

"It is strange that even after a month, the state government has not been able to bring the situation under control and killings are continuing," he said, adding that Gujarat appeared to be under 'the control of mobs'.

"The Chief Minister either lacks the will or competence to check the violence," Shrivastava said.

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee said in Kolkata that Modi 'should go and a new person should take over in Gujarat' as the violence continues even a month after it began and despite the prime minister's visit to the state.

She said a fact-finding team of her party, which visited Gujarat just after the violence, has sent its report to the prime minister squarely blaming the Modi government for not being able to control the situation.

"Under the prevailing circumstances, it is only imperative that Vajpayee rise to the occasion so that the sparks emanating from Gujarat do not spread to the rest of the country," she said.
