Vajpayee inspects burnt
bogies in Godhra

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday inspected the two bogies of Sabarmati Express in which 59 kar sevaks were burnt alive on February 27 by a mob. The incident triggered communal clashes across Gujarat claiming over 800 lives.

The prime minister examined the burnt bogies after meeting senior railway officials, including Western Railways General Manager V D Gupta and Divisional Regional Manager B D Maudagil.

Vajpayee later met representatives of both Hindu and Muslim communities and sought from them details of the tragic event.

The prime minister was accompanied by Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers Arun Jaitley (law), C P Thakur (health), Uma Bharati (sports) and Kanshi Ram Rana (textiles).
