Unlike most others in the political parties in India today, he had larger goals and commitment in his mind and heart in providing leadership to the citizens of India. His commitment to secular ideas was so great that he remained with the Congress party all his life even though his mother belonged the opposing party. Surely, his love and affection for his mother may have been great, yet his commitment to secularism was much greater. I had a personal connection with his inspiration and goodwill. Prior to coming to the United States to study law in September 1992, I had met with him in Delhin in making him a request for financial help.
