Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday said there could be a meeting with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf at the forthcoming SAARC summit in Kathmandu early January.
"If the summit is held then we could meet," he told reporters at a luncheon hosted by BJP spokesman V K Malhotra.
Meanwhile, Pakistan also said that President Pervez Musharraf was ready to meet Prime Minister Vajpayee in Kathmandu, Nepal during the SAARC summit.
"We are ready to meet," Pakistan's Information Secretary Anwar Mehmood said when asked about Vajpayee's statement.
Mahmood described the statement as positive. "We have always said that the dialogue process between India and Pakistan should continue. Pakistan considers it as a positive step."
The SAARC summit is due to be held on January 4-6 in Kathmandu.
The two leaders have not met since the Agra summit in July.
Vajpayee had in recent statements said the two could meet in New Delhi, but ruled out a summit on the ground that a conducive atmosphere was not present.
The two leaders were in United Nations early in November to attend the General Assembly session, but had not met on the sidelines.
