NSCN(I-M) warns of retaliation

Jaishree Balasubramanian in Bangkok

A day after the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) threatened to pull out of the four-year-old truce with the government, its top leader Thuingaleng Muivah Thursday warned of retaliation, charging New Delhi with not honouring its commitment to extend the ceasefire area.

Muivah, who is here facing trial in a local court, also announced that the outfit had declared "an indefinite emergency" across Nagaland and said his men "have already gone into the jungles and will retaliate if they are provoked or attacked".

He told PTI over the telephone that "the reason behind this decision is that the government never honoured its commitments, ceasefire agreements and had committed acts of torture and kidnapping of NSCN(I-M) men".

Muivah said the decision was taken at a meeting in Oking, the outfit's mobile headquarters.

Stating that the decision to extend the ceasefire in Naga-dominated areas in states neighbouring Nagaland had not been implemented, he said, "It is hard to say that the ceasefire has any meaning now and we have no moral obligation to follow it as the government has shown none".

In a statement faxed to PTI, NSCN(I-M) chairman Isaak Chishi Swu said the outfit was "compelled to declare the state of emergency after unprovoked violent situation unleashed wilfully by the government".
