In a major upset, the Speaker of the Kerala Assembly, M Vijayakumar, (Communist Party of India-Marxist), and his deputy C A Kurian, (Communist Party of India), lost to their Congress rivals.
While Viajaykumar lost to K Mohankumar from Thiruvananthapuram North by 5,000 votes, E M Augusthy wrested Peerumede from Kurian by about 3,000 votes.
Vijayakumar who had made a hat-trick of wins from the constituency, was one of the few whom the CPI-M had renominated, taking into consideration his popularity in the constituency.
