Formal case registered
against BSF in Bangladesh

A formal case has been registered in the north-western Bangladesh district of Kurigram, accusing the Border Security Force chief, Inspector General V K Gaur and 300 unnamed BSF personnel of committing "grave offences", including murder, under various sections of the country's penal code.

The complaint by Suruzzaman Bokul, chairman of the Roumari Sadar Union, was filed on May 1, accusing the BSF of intruding into Bangladesh's territory on April 18, press reports said in Dhaka.

The complaint was turned into a formal case on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Wednesday dismissed the accusation by Minister of State for Home I D Swami that Dhaka was to blame for last month's border skirmishes which took a toll of border guards of the two countries, mostly BSF personnel.

"We do not admit the allegations," Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad told reporters in Dhakar.

He said both the countries were working to resolve border-related problems through discussions and expressed the hope that given goodwill between the neighbours the problems would be overcome.

On the meeting of Indo-Bangla Joint Working Groups, the foreign minister said, "We have expressed our desire that the first meeting between the two countries to solve the border issue should be held here. "Our desire to have the first meeting in Dhaka has been communicated to India through diplomatic channels," he said, adding, "We will, however, not press for it."

The venue would be settled through discussions between the two countries, he said.

Azad said we have stated earlier that May 22-25 dates suggested by India for the meeting does not suit Bangladesh. He, however, iterated that the meeting was likely to be held by the end of the month.

He said the agenda for the talks was almost settled. These are exchange of enclaves, demarcation of border and exchange of land in each others adverse possession, he added.
