13 killed in Bihar clash, cane-charge

Soroor Ahmed in Patna

Thirteen people were feared killed in a group clash and subsequent police cane-charge in Raghopur block of Vaishali district on Sunday.

Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi represents Raghopur assembly constituency in the assembly.

Though police confirmed that four people died in a clash over a land dispute on Sunday, reports reaching the state headquarters said that nine more people lost their lives in a stampede following the cane-charge.

A crowd had gathered outside the block office to protest against the death of four persons in the group clash. The police used batons to break the cordon, which caused panic and several people reportedly jumped into the Ganga.

Though officials did not confirm the reports, it is said that nine people drowned.

A PTI report said that four bodies were recovered. It quoted the police as having said that they suspected that the four were killed and thrown into the river.

District magistrate Gautam Goswamy and superintendent of police Shobha Ohatkar have gone to the spot.

Meanwhile, a non-bailable warrant of arrest was issued against Rashtriya Janata Dal parliamentarian Mohammad Shahabuddin.

This followed the lodging of a first information report by police against him. He has been charged with murder, attempt to murder and possession of illegal arms.
