DMK, allies demand imposition
of Article 356

N Sathyia Moorthy in Madras

Reacting to the arrest of former chief minister and DMK supremo M Karunanidhi, the party and its allies on Saturday demanded imposition of Article 356 in Tamil Nadu and have called for a statewide bandh on Monday.

Briefing the media on the deliberations at the meeting, held at the DMK headquarters in Madras, DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan said, "An emergency like situation is prevailing in the state due to the jungle rule of the AIADMK."

He said a delegation of NDA leaders from the state would soon call on President K R Narayanan and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to inform them of the situation prevailing in the state.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance has called for an urgent meeting of the allies in New Delhi to review the situation in Tamil Nadu in the wake of Saturday's developments.

Prime Minister A B Vajpayee had reacted strongly to Karunanidhi's arrest and sought details from the state's chief secretary after failing to contact Chief Minister J Jayalalitha.
