Braving incessant rains and poor visibility, rescue teams, supported by a large number of locals, carried on with the rescue work through the night at Kadalundi in Kerala, where eight coaches of the Mangalore-Madras Mail derailed on Friday evening.
At least 57 people were killed in the accident and 250 others injured, railway sources said. However, there is still no official word on the toll.
"Rescue operations continued in full swing through the night despite heavy rains and poor visibility," a senior railway officer said.
A team of railway officials, led by a divisional manager is overseeing the rescue work.
