Rescue operations called off,
death toll put at 52

Earlier, sources at the Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Calicut had put the death toll at 60.

The operations braving heavy rains and inclement weather were given up after authorities concluded that there could be no more survivors after being under water for nearly 24 hours after the accident in which six coaches of the Madras bound train derailed and three of them fell into the river.

Railway sources said rescuers could not gain access to four bodies in the compartments under water.

Union Railway Minister Nitish Kumar and Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony, who visited the accident site, told newspersons separately that the toll was 52.

The MCH maintained that there were only 48 bodies in the hospital with all the dead having being brought to its morgue.

Forty-three bodies had been identified so far and 41 of them had been handed over to the next of kin, sources at the hospital said.

The condition of 18 out of the total of 262 injured remained 'critical', the sources added.

The injured were being treated in various hospitals in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.
